Posted February 15, 2018 09:02:17A close encounter between a child and a killer has sparked a coronial inquest.
Key points:A father’s nightmare is being told by his daughter who was killed in the family home in 2016Jemima Williams, then 14, was found hanging from a noose in a backyardThe coroner’s inquest has heard her death was a result of a violent attackThe coroner heard the family had a relationship of trust and was in a relationship with a man who was also involved in a violent crime when she diedIn a shocking case, the father of Jemima Williams was given a “very close encounter” with her mother after the girl was murdered at the family’s home in Adelaide’s south-west in 2016.
His daughter was killed after she ran into the family yard to say goodbye to her mother, but her killer was nowhere to be seen.
“I was very concerned, particularly about the relationship with the man, but at the same time I was very proud of the relationship,” Detective Senior Sergeant Matthew Jones told the inquest.
“Because we had a trust and a relationship, we could do something about it.”
The inquest was told a year earlier, the couple had a serious relationship of faith, but it was shattered in the weeks after the child was killed when her mother tried to call police and they were both arrested.
Police allege the killer was known to the family and he was found wearing an identical hoodie and black hooded jumper, as well as a black wig and a white face mask.
He was arrested again in January 2018, but was released on bail and never made contact with Jemima.
He is due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in July.
“The evidence presented to me by the police and the coroner is very consistent with what my daughter’s mother told me and I believe her,” Detective Jones said.
“When the police told me they had a murder case, I was told it was in relation to a man, who was known by my daughter and her mother.”
That’s what we’re saying.
“Detective Jones said the evidence showed the killer had been known to Jemima’s mother.
She said the murder of the girl occurred just after the mother and daughter had returned from a long holiday, and it was a shocking incident.”
Jemimima’s father is devastated and has spoken out in a statement released by the State Coroner’s Court.””
My concern is for the family, the community, the police, the wider community.”
Jemimima’s father is devastated and has spoken out in a statement released by the State Coroner’s Court.
“My daughter was murdered by someone who had no relationship with her,” Mr Williams said.
“The events of the week before she was murdered are completely shocking, and there is no doubt the killer has some very dark thoughts about me.”
But this case is far from over.
“Jemma’s mother and I have always been supportive of one another and I am hoping that the justice system will do what is right and that this will be the last time we see each other.”
